Let’s see - Bush proposed a mission to Mars; Obama a mission to the moon and orbiting space stations; and now Newt’s got his own plan.

Mind you that funding to NASA has shrank and the programs that were intended to provide the necessary launch capabilities have either been scrapped or greatly reduced (anyone remember Constellation and its components, Ares and Orion?).

Newt’s just pandering to the space coast. Nothing to see here…

NASA’s budget has been increasing by about half a billion a year over the past couple years, and is expected to do so through 2015: nasa.gov

Orion’s still being kicked around, too. The latest plans propose putting it on the Space Launch System. Might be interesting.

We get a lot bigger bang for the buck by sending robots to explore space, and if something goes wrong, no-one dies.
